A recent study found that over half a million homes in Britain are now home to 3 generations of the same family. A mix of social and financial circumstances, such as care needs or difficulty getting a first mortgage have led to this reverse in family living. This follows many years of increase in the distance between relatives.
The report found that the 'sandwich generation' - those living with both younger and older relatives - felt that the older generation offered support and contributed to the household whereas the younger generation offered much less.
The potential for conflict, fatigue and resentment is high - if this is indeed how many families are living, then it follows that the economic downturn will lead to even more moving to this situation. Planning and preparation for such a move is essential to its success - what can thinking through the situation from a faith perspective bring? Although the potential for negative feelings is high, could a faith perspective help offer people the hope that living with close family members could be a transformative experience rather than a situation simply to be tolerated?
If you have experience of living in a multi generational household then we would be interested to hear your experience - and any advice you may have for people considering this move.
